Q

What does 'VST' mean?

A

VST (Virtual Studio Technology) is a native plug-in standard developed by Steinberg. This is probably the most common plug-in format and is supported by most virtual instrument developers. VST is can be used on both PCs and MACs but compatibility is dependent on the host program.

What does 'AU' mean?

A

AU (Audio Unit) is the Apple plug-in standard and was developed for use in OSX. Some software supports AU exclusively like Logic, while others like Digital Performer 4 support both AU and their MAS (MOTU Audio System) format

What does 'RTAS' mean?

A

RTAS (Real Time Audio Suite) is a standard developed by Digidesign for their Pro Tools LE software and is the sucessor to Audiosuite plug-ins. RTAS also works with Pro Tools M Powered.

What does 'DXi' mean?

A

Direct X was originally created by Microsoft for Windows and includes support for sound, music, graphics and network applications. Cakewalk use the DXi standard for their audio software although Sonar users can use VST instruments with a wrapper.

What does 'Standalone' mean?

A

Standalone simply refers to whether a plug-in/virtual instrument is able to function outside of a host application. Tascam's Gigastudio 3 software for example will only work in this way and can only integrate to a host via Rewire.

What is 'OSX PPC'?

A

This refers to compatibility with versions of OSX running on MACs using PowerPC processors and not the newer Intel Mac based machines.

What is ´OSX Intel´?

A

This refers to compatibility with versions of OSX running on MACs using Intel processors. This should mean older PowerPC based machines are supported too.

A
