Tony Platt has been described as a ´true master in his field´. He has been producing and engineering records for over 30 years and his credits include Sparks, AC/DC, Bob Marley, Iron Maiden, Buddy Guy, Foreigner, Jazz Jamaica All Stars and Motörhead.
More recently, after working with Mercury award nominated Soweto Kinch on his recent album and recording Abram Wilson´s Jerwood commissioned piece "RIDE - The Ferris Wheel to the Modern Delta", Tony went on to complete the latest album with The Bad Plus and recordings with Dutch Goth/Metal band Nemesea and U.K. based Trip/Hop artists Second Person. In the last few weeks he has been mixing tracks with singer/songwriter Alexander Wolfe at Dean Street Studios where he tested the nEar08s.
Being a big fan of the nEar05 eXperience monitors, we were keen to find out what Tony thought of their new, 8" big brothers. Here´s what he said...
"Speaker choice is a particularly subjective art and so my preference is always towards speakers that are comfortable to display a personality rather than trying to claim exceptional flatness. Of course a great deal of the response of a speaker, even in the near and mid field categories, is so dependent on the room and therefore speaker choice for untreated spaces is even more difficult.
These nEar08 speakers are able to deliver the bass frequencies very well and the response is tight and realistic. By using the HF control I was easily able to achieve a workable balance between high, mid and low response that accurately reflected the material being listened to and the personality they imparted was recognisable.
I believe the nEar08s are an excellent speaker for monitoring especially in a recording situation and whilst they lack a little of the detail required in a mixing context I felt I would easily get used to this and be able to make the necessary compensation."
