Zero-G DancePack 2 for Garageband - Press Reviews

Reviewed by: Music Tech Magazine
March 2006
Earlier this year we reviewed Dance Pack 1 for Apple’s entry-level music recording software GarageBand and awarded it 9/10. “Roll on number 2,” we said. Well, six months later, it’s here, boasting more than 9,000 new samples, all gleaned from Zero-G’s back catalogue and re-programmed into Apple Loops format, making them ideal for GarageBand and Logic 7 users. They’re also compatible with any software that can use samples in AIFF format – PC or Mac.

A huge range of musical styles are covered in Dance Pack 2, much of it, obviously, firmly entrenched in the well-known dance genres. But there’s also a varied range of guitar material on offer. We particularly liked the blues stuff: very refreshing, with lots of Clapton-esque licks, riffs and bottleneck slides. Go to Zero-G’s website and check out the Interface Guitar demo to see what we mean – proof indeed that loops and samples can be used to produce all types of music, not just dance tracks.

Similarly, good vocal samples are not so commonplace. You’ll find plenty here, though, all taken from Zero-G’s Vocal XTC set. The usual ad-libs, melodies, harmonies and backing vocals are all in evidence, but it’s the gospel choir set that really shines through.

But before you part with another £100, the question is, are they as good as the last lot? If you’re looking for an exhaustive supply of hip hop, R‘n’B and trance loops, the answer has to be yes. Before you buy, though, check out the complete list of titles that make up this compilation on the Zero-G website.

You’ll have to look long and hard to find a better value-for-money dance-orientated loop library for GarageBand and Logic 7. Tremendous variety.

What is it?
The successor to Zero-G’s Apple Loop 5Gb dance collection with over 9000 loops and effects for Garageband, Logic and Soundtrack.

Any good?
Another ‘best of Zero-G’ collection, Dance Pack 2 draws it’s sounds from some of their most popular sample CDs including Pure Trip Hop, Koncept & Funktion and Funk Guitar. There’s more of an urban feel to proceedings this time around and as you’d expect with such a broad ranging collection it’s a bit of a mixed bag, but the sheer volume of content on offer here means that you’re bound to find something usable.

Verdict
Hip-hop, R&B, drum and bass fans will struggle to find a much better value collection than this.
