Rob Papen RP Delay (Download) - Press Reviews

Although Rob Papen is best known for this cutting-edge soft synths (such as Predator and Albino), he recently turned his attentions to effects with the release of RP-Verb. The follow-up, RP-Delay, is a complex multi-tap delay plug-in with deep modulation and filtering options.

Available individually as a download or packaged with the latest update to RP-Verb, the effect runs as a VST, Audio unit or RTAS plug-in in your host sequencer. In a hint to Papen’s previous experience, the spec list reads more like that of a complex soft synth than a delay effect. You’ll find six delay lines and two reversers, each with their own multi-mode filter and distortion unit with 13 filter and distortion unit with 13 filter and 11 distortion types. Each delay can work in mono or stereo and can be set to tape mode, whereby changes can be made to the delay length without any clicks. There’s also a whole range of routing options hereby the reverser can affect both the incoming signal and one of the delay lines at the same time.

Where things get really interesting, though, is in the modulation section at the bottom of the plug-in, which has four envelopes, four LFOs, four sequencers and an audio follower, all of which can be routed to any parameter or even to themselves. Add to this the fact that modulation triggers can also come from external MIDI messages and you’ve got an incredibly powerful sound-shaping tool.

With so many controls and options on offer, the interface does come across as a little confusing at first, but one you play around with it for a while and have a flick through some of the presets the full potential becomes clear. From rhythmic, resonating drum delays through to insane cascading-pitch vocals, RP-Delay has the ability to totally transform your audio, adding interest to vocal lines or life and detail to synths and instruments.

The complex results that this plug-in delivers may not be to everyone’s tastes, but for anyone writing progressive electronic music, especially in genres such an minimal techno, it could prove to be an incredible weapon for spicing up tracks.

Verdict A complex delay plug-in with near infinite modulation possibilities and sound design potential.

Review extracts…

As delays go, this is pretty powerful stuff. RP-Delay features six separate stereo delay modules that can be arranged in nine different modes, from full serial to parallel multi – and everything in between. Each delay module also has its own filter – with a variety of modes on offer – and a distortion feed with numerous algorithms.

[…]

If you’ve ever wondered whether there’s such a thing as too many options, take a look at RP-Delay’s modulation settings. The modulation sequencers alone can be routed to 110 possible destinations, so it’s lucky you’ve got four of them to play with. But what if that’s not enough? Well, you’ve got eight more modulation routing settings, so we’re talking preposterous levels of noodling potential here. Want to use a sequencer to control the rate of an LFO that modulates the level of distortion on a given delay module? No problem.

[…]

RP-Delay also sets itself apart from the pack with a series of live performance features, all controllable by MIDI and effectively transforming it into a hybrid instrument/effect plug-in. The two reverse modules are particularly interesting, splitting the signal into chunks and reversing them. With individual settings for Left and Right Channels, plus a tempo sync option, it’s a powerful and interesting addition. With so many features on offer, it’s a good job there are a few hundred presets to offer convenient starting points, otherwise you could get lost among the options for days.

Review Extracts...

...all you need to know is that RP-Delay is as simple or as complex as you need it to be. Here's the best bit, though: an unassuming little button labelled Rev on each delay set, which enables its Reverser module. This records a chunk of the incoming signal (up to four seconds, or half a bar in sync mode) and then plays it backwards. [...] whether synced to the project tempo or set manually in milliseconds, it's one of the most obviously useful and consistently jaw-dropping features we've played with in a long time, and the standout feature of RP-Delay.

[...]

This is, without doubt, one of the best delays we've used, and one of the best third party plug-ins we;ve seen for live performance. It's perfect for edits, special effects, thickening vocals, making basslines from a single sound and so many more things that it would take an entire magazine to list them all. The price is quite stupendous - we thought it was a typo at first, as we were expecting it to cost around the same as RP-Verb which is £125. RP-Verb owners needn't feel put out, though, because RP-Delay is a free download for them.
