SDX: Music City USA Music Tech August 201018-08-2010
The latest expansion pack for Superior Drummer 2.0 is Music City USA, which was recorded in Nashville Tennessee with seasoned drummer Harry Stinson and engineer Chuck Ainlay. The session took place back in 2007 and the results can already be heard on the Nashville EZX pack for EZdrummer. However, while that pack features only one drum kit at 1.2GB, Music City contains two full kits plus extra drums and multiple articulations and comes to 12GB across three DVDs.
Given Nashville’s rich musical heritage, it’s unsurprising to find that this kit is tailored for classic country, pop and rock ‘n’ roll sounds. The main kits contain PB and Slingerland kicks and toms, mostly Sabian cymbals, plus five different snare drums with 21 articulations for different playing techniques and positions.
Compared to some SDX packs, Music City has a very open, clean and tight sound. There are 13 presets created by Ainlay that range from subtle ballad sounds t heavy gated drums with clever sidechaining. Some of the other presets, however, are a little too over-compressed and clicky for our tastes. You can also download an accompanying set of MIDI grooves that cover a broad range of styles, including ¾ and 6.8 swing beats, slow ballads and uptempo rock.
Overall, this is another solid addition to the Superior expansion series. Although it’s not as big or heavy sounding as some of the others, it excels at classic pop, country and rock sounds.
Verdict: Clean, crisp, open drum sounds that’ll be perfect for country, pop and rock producers.
