Pro Tools 8 Level 3 tutorial DVD - Music Tech - March 2010

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Pro Tools is a staple of many professional studios due to its sturdy integration with top-of-the-range hardware and excellent audio editing tools. However, with so many options available it’s not the easiest DAW to get to grips with. ASK Video’s four Pro Tools 8 DVDs cover the whole spectrum of techniques and tools available, but we’re looking here specifically at Level 3, which picks up where Level 2 left off.

The 33 videos can be run directly from the DVD on Mac or PC using ASK’s own video player. You’ll need the latest version of QuickTime to use this, but installers are included. Not only do you get over three hours of high-quality video, but also 20 folders of session files to accompany the chapters on the disc. This is great value and really helps you to understand what’s going on.

The chapters start with templates, file management and importing, exchanging and archiving sessions, then move on to discuss shortcuts, tempo tracks and audio and automation editing. It’s the later chapters that more advanced users will find most useful, with superb descriptions on mastering, using dither, surround sound mixing and sidechain tricks. As an added bonus there are also two chapters looking at building intricate click tracks using TL Metro and working with audio in Melodyne Essential.

Taken on their own, the topics covered on this DVD may seem a little sporadic. However, if you were to invest in all four DVDs you would have a complete in-depth training course in all the main functions of Pro Tools 8.

Verdict A great training tools, but you really need all four DVDs in order to cover every area of the program.

Rating: 8/10
