A good vocal hook is the one thing above all others that can potentially transform a track from being merely good to being a memorable hit. This is especially true of club music, where it’s becoming increasingly hard to stand out from the crowd. Vocal Factory from Zero-G is actually three libraries that were previously sold separately, now combined to form the ultimate vocal resource.
The DVD contains over 4GB and 3,700 samples in a mixture of 16- and 24-bit-quality Acid Wavs, plus sampler patches with all of the phrases mapped out for EXS24, Kontakt and NN-XT. The first two packs are Vocal Forge and Vocal Foundry, which include male and female MCs, R&B singers, soul divas, dance, pop and folk vocals spread across a total of 30 songs.
Each song features vocal tracks divided into each section of the arrangement, with two versions for double-tracking purposes and additional harmonies and adlibs where appropriate.
Some of the songs are surprisingly good; others feature obvious lyrics and cheesy melodies. Because of this, you may get only limited use from this pack if you are looking for full song vocals. However, where both of these libraries really excel is in the addition of individual phrases, adlibs and excellent Toolkit folders. These contain small phrases in a number of styles from gothic and operatic to effected vocoders and beatbox samples. Let’s not also forget the final pack, Vocal India, which features 11 classical ragas and three more commercial-sounding tracks.
Although you’ll need to spend time wading through to find the right sample, this is a fantastic resource if you are just looking for a single line or shout. And often, that’s all it takes!
Verdict: Some slightly dodgy full vocals, but also some club hooks that are worth their weight in gold.
