Cubase 5 Levels 2 & 3 – Music Tech – August 2010

Sunday, August 15, 2010

If you want to learn about your favourite DAW but can’t afford private tuition, your best bet is to go for video tutorials. However, there are several types to choose from, ranging from specific tips and tricks or genre-based techniques to more in-depth and complete courses.

ASK Video’s DVD series of tutorials fall into the latter category, with every nook and cranny explained in-depth across a total of four DVDs. Levels 2 and 3 have just been released and Level 4 should be out by the time you read this. There is a general progression across all four discs, with basic editing covered on DVD 1 and more advanced techniques and functions explored n the subsequent levels.

Each DVD contains over three hours of video plus a number of accompanying session files so you can follow the work in each chapter, and although some of these are more useful than others, this is an excellent additional helps makes these lessons stand out against other tutorials on the market. Level 2 contains 44 videos that cover a number of topics, from standard functions such as crossfading, markers and folders to more advanced topics such as sidechaining, using VariAudio and Groove Agent One. Level 3 contains only 33 chapters, but they are a little more in-depth, with sections on vocal comping, pitch correction, setting up MIDI devices, advanced scoring, beat designer and loop mash, to name a few.

Although the ASK Videos can be a little dry when compared to others available, the pacing is spot on and the attention to detail thorough, If you’re merely after specific tips or functions of Cubase then you may find cheaper and more useful tutorials elsewhere. However, if you want a full course in Cubase 5, then this is the most complete package available and we would confidently recommend going for the four-disc bundle.

Verdict The most complete Cubase training course available – an excellent learning resource.

Rating 9/10
