According to Sample Logic, music consists of six elements: ambience, bass, harmony, impacts, melody and rhythm. These categories neatly sum up the types of sounds you´re likely to need if you´re interested in composing for media productions, computer games, film, TV shows and so on.
To that end, Sample Logic has produced The Elements, a 13.5GB, four-DvD library of mainly electronic instruments, loops and multis, which come preloaded in the ubiquitous Kontakt 2 player.
Despite the size of this library, the well thought-out categorisation makes finding suitable sounds easy. For example, you might need a pad for a static, murky dockside computer game scene - you´ll find it under Ambience>Mysterious> London Fog.
Most musical styles in the electronic genre are covered here and the production quality is high. In fact, some of the ambient patches have been used in the TV series CSI:NY, a good indication of the glossy production style prevalent in the collection. High- quality? Certainly. Slightly bland? Ultimately, it´s a matter of taste.
Verdict – A highly professional production library crammed with just about every conceivable sound needed for – but not limited to – modern-day electronic media projects. KG
