Toontrack recently released the second pack of mastering presets for their EZmix 2 multi-effect mixing software. For anyone that hasn’t checked it out yet, EZmix 2 combines in-built effects units to create preset chains designed to give high quality results incredibly fast, whatever the scenario.
We caught up with Toontrack founder Mattias Eklund to learn more about what EZmix 2 can do for your next master…
“There are a number of common problems most, or dare I say all, mixes have, even those honed to near perfection by the best in the business. Vocals can be too loud or too low, the snare pop out, the overall EQ a bit too muddy – the list goes on. When we set out to do the series of mastering packs for EZmix 2, one of our goals was to pinpoint some of these issues and offer one-click settings for the songwriter or producer looking for quick and easy results on the fly. We call these ‘premaster fixes’.
So, if your mix has any of the issues one of our settings can help, add an instance of EZmix 2 at the top of that channel’s insert and look for the premaster fix that describes your problem. After that, your mix will hopefully be in a better state and you can continue with a second instance of EZmix 2 to add another dimension. It’s simply a matter of trying, listening and doing some minor tweaking with the controls in EZmix 2.
One thing that is good to know is that the raw material we used when designing the presets was peaking at about -4 dB. If you set your mix’s output level to around that value, you’ll be at a good starting point. Also, remember that the gain you send into EZmix 2 affects compressors, limiters and and other effects, so be careful.
After spending a week with Mats “Limpan” Lindfors and watching him work, explaining what he does and listening back to the results, I know for a fact that we have a set of mastering tools that can only come from years and years of experience. I am confident that the two mastering EZmix Packs will be a great asset in any songwriter’s or producer’s set of quick tools.”
There are multiple preset packs for EZmix 2 available, covering everything from Metal to Pop. To find out if EZmix 2 could fit in to your workflow just download the free EZmix 2 demo version and give it a try for yourself.
