Softube Console 1 MkII

Softube Console 1 MkII is an integrated hardware/software centrepiece which works in tandem with your DAW. It takes the quick and intuitive workflow of a digital mixer and pairs that with the great sound of an analog Solid State Logic SL 4000 E mixer. On the hardware, you select the track you want to work with and then you adjust the equalizer, compressor, gate and saturation settings using physical knobs and buttons. So: Select a track, tweak the knobs. Select another track, tweak the knobs – that's essentially how you use Console 1.

The Console 1 hardware gives you hands-on control of EQ, compressor, gate, volume and pan on all your tracks. No MIDI mapping is needed – the hardware is tightly integrated with the Console 1 software, straight out of the box.

For full details please go to the Softube Console 1 MkII product page.

Softube SSL XL 9000 K-Series for Console 1

Solid State Logic XL 9000 K represents a completely different approach to analog circuits compared to the SL 4000 E channel, included with Console 1. And since XL 9000 K has virtually no distortion of its own, the Softube channel also includes a model of SSL's famous VHD (Variable Harmonic Drive) circuit.

While Solid State Logic's SL 4000 E is widely considered a great pop and rock 'n' roll console with its slightly gritty and forward sound, the circuit design of XL 9000 K offers an extreme bandwidth, minimal phase shift and super low distortion. This makes it one of the world´s most popular analog consoles for hip-hop and R'n'B, where the solid, deep low end and extended highs work great for getting that hyper modern, large and wide sound. For the same reasons, it is also loved for classical and acoustic audiophile recordings.

For full details please go to the Softube SSL XL 9000 K-Series for Console 1 product page.

Modern Workflow

The Console 1 hardware gives you hands-on control of EQ, compressor, gate, volume and pan on all your tracks. No MIDI mapping is needed – the hardware is tightly integrated with the Console 1 software, straight out of the box.

Timeless Sound

Pamper your tracks with the sound of the legendary Solid State Logic SL 4000 E console – probably the most used high end console in the history of music recording. Softube's emulation was developed in close collaboration with SSL, and it's included with the purchase of Console 1.

Expand Your Options

Customize your channels with any of the over 60 available Console 1 ready plug-ins from Softube and Universal Audio. Mix and match units from Chandler Limited, Fairchild, Teletronix, Tube-Tech, Abbey Road Studios and many others. Pre-mapped and ready to go.

A Lifetime of Mixing

Console 1 is a premium Swedish design, built to last for many years of mixing. Its steel chassis makes it solid as a rock, and the knobs and buttons have the responsiveness and feel you´d expect from a high end analog console.

Add More Consoles

In addition to single Console 1 ready plug-ins, there are entire Console 1 channel strips available, with EQ, compressor, gate and modeled saturation from the original analog hardware. Currently, the options are Solid State Logic XL 9000 K-Series for Console 1, British Class A For Console 1 and Summit Audio Grand Channel for Console 1, with more to come.

Control Your DAW

Console 1 works with any major DAW on the market. But certain DAWs–  currently Presonus Studio One and Cakewalk SONAR – feature additional integration, meaning you can use the Console 1 hardware to control vital DAW functions such as track selection, volume, send levels, pan and solo/mute. We aim to have this functionality added for all DAWs.

And the Winner Is ...

The first-generation Console 1 was an immediate success and did not only receive prestigious awards and praise from the pro audio press – but more importantly, the end users loved it. Even seasoned engineers such as Michael Brauer, Jason Goldstein, Dave Isaac and Gareth Jones took the system to their hearts.

Upgraded Hardware

Three years after the original Console 1 release, it is time to introduce the Mk II version. It has the same build quality as the original units, with some minor layout changes such as more visible LED markers. More importantly, efficient manufacturing processes have made the system much more affordable.

What do I Need to use UAD Plug-Ins With Console 1?

Apart from the Console 1, you need a UAD Accellerator (Satellite or UAD-2 PCIe card) or an Apollo interface, and you need to own the Console 1 ready UAD plug-in you want to use. With that in place, it's plug and play. The Console 1 system will automatically identify the Console 1 ready plug-ins (both UAD and Softube) that are installed on your system, and they will be pre-mapped for you. Just open them from within the Console 1 system and mix away.

What About Those Additional Console 1 Channel Strips?

There are currently three entire channel strips available for purchase: British Class A For Console 1, Solid State Logic XL 9000 K-Series for Console 1 and Summit Audio Grand Channel for Console 1. These emulate entire hardware channels, including distortion characteristics from the original hardware. The individual sections can also be mixed and matched with Softube or Universal Audio plug-ins. More Console 1 channel strips are in the works.

Which DAWs Does Console 1 Work With?

Console 1 works in tandem with any DAW that can use VST, Audio Unit or AAX plug-ins. Mac and Windows, 32 and 64 bits. Different DAWs offer different levels of integration, please refer to the compatibility chart in the Additional Images section of this page.

"Console 1 MKII is available now as if you didn’t already know! I’ve got mine, have you? If you haven’t then I suggest you do! It’s a gamer changer!

It’s like becoming Borg. You have been assimilated, you are as one with the system. It is intuitive, user friendly, even the little things are a great help. At the touch of a button the display disappears revealing all that was behind it and doing the same brings the display back up. No reaching for the mouse to close the screen. The screen is fully adjustable to suit your own needs. Everything that you do is reflected in your host daw depending upon the amount of integration currently possible. Further integration with the main DAWS is coming.

If you don’t use plugins or the facilities of you DAW and use just the console then you are in for a treat from the input stage to the output stage. The feel is firm but smooth, you can use the Output Volume to fade your track perfectly with no jitter or need to take a second grip.

The Gate [Shape] is superb with great control and the hard gate is just like chopping off your head, it’s instance and you can even use it to manipulate your sound. The EQ section is beautiful. Low, Low Mid, High Mid and High all helping to create a great sound and happening on screen so you know exactly where you are and what you have done. The whole experience shifts you naturally away from watching the numbers and instinctively you start using your ears. The way it should be.

The Compressor Section feels like a real hardware compressor and the sound is great. It has the standard controls that I understand best making it far easier to use than most software compressors. And the drive/character section creates great texture in the sound.

The Console 1 MKII in my humble opinion, leads to better mixing, it feels like you’re using a real console. The fact that the Console 1 MKII fits neatly on your desk, doesn’t take anything away. Select any track button across the top and you instantly have that track up on screen ready to edit. The track title is seen clearly across the very top of the screen. You don’t need to slide your chair along the length of a massive console. At all times, you can see all the tracks that are in your host clearly by name with LED Meters displaying the levels. If you have more than twenty Tracks/ Inputs/Sends you just select the next page button and vice versa. What has been forgotten, you tell me!

For almost thirty years, I had a dream. When the Console 1 MKII, it fulfilled that dream. A dream I never thought would come true. It may have not been the real deal, it may have been but a software emulation, but I had my very own SSL SL 4000E!

I have always wanted one, but s a private, non-professional individual, the real deal was never going to become a reality. Just how close the software is I don’t honestly know, but knowing just how far Softube go with their plugins, it’s going to be real close. And too boot, it fits nicely within my Studio come Lounge.

I’m no professional, but with the Console 1 MKII I can move my game up to the next level. I have yet to read the full manual and I am already doing great things. Just imagine what can be achieved when you know everything it can do. Plus, you can use more than one great console in your studio as there are others available for the Console 1 MKII and more to follow along with further host integration.

If you don’t own a Console 1 MKII, then you are missing something else. More so if you are computer based rather than hardware. You get the real feel and not just the feel of a mouse in your hand. The Console 1 MKII rocks. The console software that comes with the Console 1 MK II is the SSL SL 4000E. A legendary desk when it comes to rock. So, if rock is your thing, then it’s the best desk for you. If not the Console 1 MKII is still a must have as the SSL SL 4000E is not limited to rock and other consoles can be purchased and added later!" - Soulmansblue, Console 1 user
