The Vienna Instruments Collections included in Winds Complete owe their reputation not only to their outstanding quality and playability but part of their fame is also due to the selection of excellent and sometimes extraordinary instruments.
Collections such as Special Woodwinds, Special Brass and Historic Winds feature rarities you will not find in other sample libraries or software instruments. And in the Saxophones Collection, the wealth of articulations exceeds normal symphonic requirements, crossing over to the realm of jazz and pop.

Everything Woodwind! Contained within Winds Complete is the complete collection of woodwinds of the symphonic orchestra and more from VSL - in fact, everything that is included in the Woodwinds Bundle:
WOODWINDS I includes the standard instrumentation with flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon (each recorded solo and in three-player ensembles).
WOODWINDS II expands the section with piccolo and alto flute, two English-horns, small clarinet in Eb, bass clarinet and contrabassoon, to meet the needs of large romantic and modern orchestral scores.
The SPECIAL WOODWINDS COLLECTION provides you with exotic treasures such as bass flute, oboe d’amore, heckelphone, basset horn, and contrabass clarinet, the latter being almost twice as long as the bass clarinet. These are uncommon instruments that allow you to create new and unusual sounds.
CLARINET in Bb 2
The clarinet was integrated into the symphony orchestra during the Viennese Classic period in the second half of the 18th century. Today the instrument is commonly used as a solo instrument as well as in chamber music, concert bands, military bands and marching bands in almost all styles, ranging from classical repertoire to folk music, to klezmer and jazz.
Both the instrument as well as the performance of bassoonist Stepan Turnovsky, a frequent first bassoonist with the Vienna Philharmonic, proved to be perfect for the Bassoon 2. His ability to play exceptionally broad tonal reaches, and to change his playing position to compensate for variances from note to note, coupled with the Vienna team’s extensive array of mic positions, result in an extraordinarily precise sampled sound.
Consequently, two solo bassoons are now available in our instrumental collection. The Bassoon 2 with a range spanning from tenor to bass offers an extended pitch range from Bb to F2, and is therefore also recommended to perform as first bassoon.
The breadth of Brass! Contained within Winds Complete is the entire range of symphonic orchestra brass instruments and more from VSL - in fact, everything that is included in the Brass Bundle:
BRASS I includes the standard instrumentation with trumpet, Viennese horn, tenor trombone and tuba (each recorded solo and in three-player ensembles).
BRASS II expands the spectrum with piccolo and bass trumpet, triple-horn, bass and contrabass trombone, contrabass tuba, Wagner tuba and the warm sounding cimbasso of the tuba family, to accommodate any large romantic or modern orchestral score. A specialty of the Brass II Collection is the “Epic Horns” sample set, a massive sounding body of eight double horns, well-known for its use in many Hollywood action scores.
The included SPECIAL BRASS COLLECTION contains less common instruments such as cornet, alto trombone and euphonium, as well as the six “Fanfare Trumpets” (three trumpets in Bb and three trumpets in C), the perfect companion to the eight “Epic Horns” of the Brass II Collection.
VIENNA DIMENTION BRASS 1 and VIENNA DIMENTION BRASS 2 features four well-rehearsed ensembles of four brass players each. The players were recorded in groups, but with dedicated microphones for each instrument, resulting in a homogenous ensemble sound while still allowing direct access to each voice. What’s more, Vienna Dimension Brass II includes a unique ensemble of four Wagner tubas that you’ll scarcely find on any other library! These rare instruments were originally created for Wagner’s famous epic opera cycle “Der Ring des Nibelungen”.
The flugelhorn in Bb is a member of the bugle-horns family like the euphonium or the (contra)bass tuba, even though the instrument looks rather like a larger trumpet. Beyond its use in military and marching bands it is a favourite solo instrument in jazz music today. Being almost as flexible as the trumpet, the flugelhorn features a much softer and warmer tone due to its cone-shaped and wide bell.
Once again, trumpet player Alfred (Freddy) Staudigl, one of Vienna Symphonic Library’s longest engaged musicians, proves to be an experienced master of his art.
His skillfully crafted performances turn our Trumpet in Bb into an effective crossover instrument. In its expressive tonal range, the classic European style is expanded with more intense vibrato and brasher tones, while sacrificing nothing in aesthetics. In addition to a wider sound spectrum than provided by the Trumpet in C, the Trumpet in Bb also offers “Rips & Falls”.
TRUMPET (Bb) MUTED
During the recordings of the Muted Trumpet in Bb Alfred (Freddy) Staudigl has once again proven to be an experienced master of his art, expanding the classic European style with more intense vibrato, portamento, bends and falls, while sacrificing nothing in aesthetics.
The Single Instrument contains the same articulations as the Trumpet in Bb, but all samples have been recorded using a classical “straight mute”. The result is a thin and slightly “nasal” tone that blends well with ensembles of woodwinds and strings, but is also perfectly suited for lyrical melodic solo lines.
Everything extra! Experimenting with and discovering all-new combinations of instruments and timbres is one of the most exciting activities in orchestration. Contained within Winds Complete you get instruments that are rarely used in the classical symphonic context but add rich new colours to your arrangements - in fact, everything that is included in the Additional Winds Bundle:
SAXOPHONES covers the complete saxophones family (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, and bass saxophone) turning its attention to romantic solo and orchestra literature as well as to jazz instrumentations.
Recorders includes samples of four different instruments (soprano recorder, alto recorder, tenor recorder, and bass recorder), adding a particular exotic timbre with references to ancient or far eastern worlds to orchestral scores.
The Historic Winds series offer recordings of some beautiful and unique instruments from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, such as ophicleide, cornett (zink), serpent, transverse flute, and oboe da caccia, natural horn and natural trumpet.
Whether you’re following an authentic performance practice or you’re just looking for new inspiring sound sources – Historic Winds I offers some beautiful and unique instruments! This Collection features recordings of five rare instruments from the Renaissance and Baroque periods: Transverse flute, Baroque oboe, oboe da caccia, ophicleide and serpent.
This Collection contains instrumental rarities that are not only perfectly suited to score appropriate film subjects but are a real source of inspiration if you’re looking for all-new timbres and instrumental combinations in order to enrich your arrangements with new colors. Historic Winds II includes recordings of nine rare instruments of the Renaissance and Baroque era: Cornett (zink), five crumhorns, and three natural trumpets.
The natural horn is the predecessor to the modern French horn and has neither finger holes nor valves. As a result, only natural tones according to the harmonic series can be produced by adjusting the embouchure and changing lip-tension. As a user of Historic Winds III, you’ll reap the benefits of the natural horn’s confident tone, without having to worry about the challenges of performance.
For Historic Winds III, VSL have captured a natural horn with ten different tuning slides (Bb basso, Bb alto, C basso, C alto, D, Eb, E, F, G, A) for utmost flexibility. The soloist was Marcus Schmidinger who performed all of the horn instruments in our Brass I and Brass II Collections and also contributed to the Dimension Brass series. Apart from basic articulations and Performance Elements this Collection also provides crescendos and diminuendos with different durations, fast repetitions, and flutter tonguing.
